Betta Fish QuestionsCategory: General Betta QuestionsHow do you tell if your Betta ate a shrimp?
Amy asked 4 months ago

Hello! I recently added extra plants and two young amano shrimp to my betta’s tank. I tried to get the biggest shrimp from the store, they are each about 3/4 of an inch, Betta is not yet full grown, at around 2 inches. I have not witnessed any signs of aggression from my betta, and I’m not even sure the shrimp are small enough to eat. On the first day, the shrimp were all over the tank, jumping out of the way if the Betta got too close. But in the next few days, I only saw one of the shrimp for a little while. Is it possible they’ve just gotten way better at hiding? How can I tell if my betta ate one while I wasn’t watching?

Tough call here:
If you watch carefully for awhile and don’t see your shrimp he is either hiding or has been eaten by your Betta.

I find that if you are unsure then as you move things around when you do a tank cleaning you can keep inventory of your Betta’s mates to see how they are doing.
Honestly this all depends on the temperament of your as to whether this is a good situation or not.

Generally I like to be cautious, have never own shrimp before. Betta’s do better with mellow non-flashy fish as they are seen as less of a threat.
If your Betta ignores the shrimp for now you may be ok for now…but I’m not so sure about the long term situation.
